Build a float switch?
Build a float switch, is it worth it?
The question was could they build a float switch like the
one i have shown using some average components, or how about using a
magnet and magnetic proximity switch on a float. Let us look at the micro
switch version first.
Micro switch version
You need to be able to anchor your switch in place, find
a heavy ball bearing (if its not spherical it wont roll) find a suitable
water tight container and of course cable and a micro switch, sounds easy
doesn't it? Well in theory yes it does, but the hardest part is keeping it
waterproof. you have to use something which is plastic, thick and durable,
and waterproof its not really that easy is it.*
Proximity Version
Now this must be easier, magnet on a float, operates
magnetic proximity switch, proximity switch not in the water, doesn't need
to be sealed, simple?
Yes it does need to be sealed because by being a float
switch its going to be near water, if its near water it must be sealed for
safety and to prevent corrosion.
Also as most magnetic proximity switches are for very
low voltage use, that means you will require a power supply and a relay to
switch mains not to mention the switch magnet and float, so the costs are
going up*
Mix them both
Have a float operating a proximity switch?
This is a novel idea but as you need to seal everything
the micro switch will not be able to move since it is sealed so give up on
this idea.
I am not saying its not possible to make your own, i am
saying that yes it will be an interesting project to make one, but here is
the crunch *
Assuming you do make one that is waterproof and works
you still can not use it until you have it tested and passed as safe by a
suitable person. (more money, but well spent money) Why? because if (when)
something goes wrong since you made it and did not get it suitably tested,
YOU are responsible for anything that happens.
So although what seemed to be a good idea at the time
(like speeding is until you loose your licence) if you want a float switch
please buy one don't risk a life.
I could have also said you know how a pump works, make
one of them, but you wouldn't because its better to buy one
Martin.
