Feature pump

Feature pump, which one?

You have just brought a free standing fountain, but did not get a pump which should it have?

In our example below the fountain is 4 feet (1.2m) from the top of the sump to the water outlet, The pump you will need must be a fountain pump, not a waterfall or filter pump, this is because although both pumps can pump a high volume of water they usually can not pump it up very high (since they do not need to)

So which fountain pump should you get?

As this fountain is 4 feet high you must get a pump which has a max head of least 6 feet, if you do not then the pump will only pump the water to its maximum head, but it will never come out the outlet at the top.

Equally you do not want a pump that can pump to say 20 feet as yes this will work, but it will be a waste, since you will have to turn the pump way down.

So in short you will need a pump that has a max head of around 1.5 times the height of the fountain, but also most pumps have a flow rate graph this will show you how much water can be pumped to what height

The above is only true providing the pipe you have has a big a diameter as is possible, and also has as few bends as possible (preferably none)
