Dear martin
This year I have found that all my water
plants under the surface of the pond keep getting eaten as fast as I add
some more. My lilly leaves and flower buds are getting eaten too before
they get to the surface of the water. Yesterday in desperation I
drained almost the entire pond to get to the bottom of my problem(pardon
the pun!). I found some insects right at the bottom in the sludge(whic
I have tried to clean out as much as possible). The look almost like
maggots. They are white with red eyes. Fairly long legs but not as
long as a pond skater. I took one to the local garden centre today but
the chap at the pond centre was unable to identify it. One of his
customers said it looked like some form of locust and is probably laying
loads of eggs at the bottom. I have 4 tench and 12 goldfish in the
pond. It is about 12,00 0gallons. They suggested addin salt to the
water because maybe the insect life won't like that. Apart from that
they didn't really know what to suggest. Have you any suggestions? I
am unable to shade the pond at all at the moment because anything
growing gets eaten.
