Water gardens

High water table?

High water table,  want a pond what can you do?

You may not know that if you have a high water table and you have a pond that as the ground water level rises it can lift your liner, or if its fibreglass it can lift the whole thing out and possibly float away.

You have two options, either build a raised pond or build a sump with a pump next to the pond

As the drawing shows the sump MUST be lower than the bottom of the pond or it will not work. The sump walls can be made from bricks, but if you do this you must leave spaces in the mortar for water to get in, also you will notice the sump floor is not solid, it is just soil. You should also put a paving slab (on bricks) in the bottom of the sump, this prevents the pump sucking up soil. You can also buy a plastic "stackable sump" from a builders merchant, it consist of plastic rings that you stack on top of each other to the desired height. The pump is a sump pump with a float switch, so as the water level rises it automatically switches on and the ground water is pumped to waste.

It is also essential that you fit an inspection cover or a suitably strong "lid" (The lid can be a large paving slab) on the top to prevent anyone falling in also debris from getting blown in
