Leaking pond
Leaking pond, what to do
Leaking ponds can cause disaster If the water level in your pond or pool is going down
you may have a leak, what can you do? Unfortunately you can not ad a well
known brand of car radiator sealant to your pond, it is toxic to fish. But
if you could, would such a product also block the jets on any
fountain pump. (unless you want to tell me otherwise)
How long has the water level been dropping?
If your leak suddenly started have you just added or
altered something? if so this is the first place to look for a leak. (new
waterfall or water feature?) If you have added a new fountain please be
aware of the JW fountain rule
What to do
Have you turned off all your pumps? this will prove
if it is a pump or pipes leaking (check the pipes / connections are any
wet)
Also look around the surrounding area looking for a damp
/ wet patch
Please also remember that in the unlikely event the sun is
shinning (English humour) it may be evaporation, its not uncommon to loose
2 inches per day, in shallower pools it will be more noticeable. Also if
it is a particular windy day, wind can "lift" the water reducing the over
all level
If you still can not find the leak, leave the pond / pool,
do not refill it, wait until the water stops getting lower, mark where
this point is.
Is your pool made with a liner
Check along water level mark (where you marked it) look
for any puncture, water will leak through the smallest of holes, get a
puncture repair strip, follow instructions and apply. If you can not find
it remove liner and hold up to light, where you see light through the
liner is your leak.
re fill pool / pond.
Is your pool concrete?
Water will leak through the smallest crack, mark wall at
water level, then empty pool, look for any obvious cracks / spits if you
can not find any you are going to have to do the following all the way
round, if you can find a crack then you can proceed at this point.
Remove at least 8cm wide of concrete (and tiles if you
have them) either side of water level (where you marked it)
Clean and re cement area, allow at least 7 days to
thoroughly dry. Paint with pond sealer up and down, allow to dry. Then
paint with pond sealer such as G4.
Retile pool / pond (if you have tiles) refill pond / pool.
So long as you have followed above starting from the top,
your pond / pool will not leak.
