Over wintering your
pond
Over winter your pond / water feature, here is how
The feature
When it starts to get very cold and icy it may be a
good idea to protect your water feature. But how you do it depends on
what type of water feature you have.
If it is a basic pebble pool then you can just turn
off the pump. If how ever you have an "elaborate feature" this
may need to be covered in the extreme cold (as well as turning the
pump off)
Do not forget that as water freezes it
expands, if you have a feature (say a rock) if water freezes in any small
cracks it will expand so splitting your feature.
If it is a
purpose built water spitter then by turning the pump off insures that
there will be no water in it as it will run back down the feed pipe
The
Pump
Most manufactures say that the pump should over
wintered in a bucket of water. This is to prevent the seals from drying
out. How ever as most features are well below ground level you should be
ok by just turning the pump off. How ever if in doubt you should remove
the pump and store it in a bucket of water. Or what ever your pump
manufacturer suggests
It
depends on how cold it gets in your area as to which you should do.
Anti
Freeze
On no account should any form of anti freeze or
salt be introduced to your water feature as these will corrode your pump.
Frost
Stat
If you know how then it is permissible to wire in
a suitable frost stat to stop your water feature pump, assuming none of
the above apply
