Pond bulging?

is your pond bulging?

If you have a pond that you built yourself, using a liner and now you find that the sides are bulging in, or that the stone slabs you used for the edging are becoming unstable it is because the ground underneath is giving way.

It is easy to remedy but there is a lot of hard work involved.

First remove the all of the slabs so that the top edge of the liner is exposed. Next you need to dig holes (About 20 cm x 20 cm x 30cm dimensions do not have to be exact.) under the middle of where each slab was. You then need to fill these holes with a 3:1 mix of concrete and leave for at least 24 hours to set

Then put down a base of 2 - 3cm of sand and relay your slabs. This process is known as under pinning, it gives support to your slabs without putting pressure on the surrounding soil.

If your pond sides have really bulged in you will have to do as mentioned above, but first remove all the soil that is causing the bulge and make the sides of your pond slope at an angle of at least 45 degrees
