Pond questions

Fake herons

You buy a fake heron and put it in your garden to deter other herons from landing and eating your pond fish. You find out the hard way it doesn't work, you complain to where you go it from and they tell you its because you sited it in the wrong place. They will tell you it should not be, say on the roof of any nearby building, or put too far away from the pond, but its too late now, what should you do?

I suggest you don't waste your money in the first place, don't buy a fake heron

Water fall

(This is based on  a question from some one who neglected to say where they are)

"I am building a pond, (aprox 6 x 3 x 2) I want to add a waterfall, there will be some plants, but no fish, do i need a filter etc?"

If there are no fish there is no need for it to be "so deep" (2 feet) Water features (which is what this is) are often 1 foot deep maximum, more often they are even less. As there will be some plants 1 foot will be adequate, 2 feet would be better for water lilies, BUT water lilies do not like splashing water, so you should not attempt to grow these. All sitting water will turn green after prolonged sunlight exposure, so in order to prevent this a U.V. and filter will indeed be required. If there were to be no plants or fish, then there are other options available.

Water feature

Here is another question from some one who neglected to say where they are

I have concreted 3 railway sleepers upright into the ground at different heights. My idea was I would have water cascading down each one as a water feature. I now realize it won’t be quite that easy. (picture attached)

Its always best to check things out first. There are several major errors with this project

1) Choice of material. Creosote soaked sleepers are no use in a garden since they are sticky and give off creosote. The creosote will soon colour the water.

2) Since they are now concreted in there is no way to catch and recirculate the water as any feature should be standing in a sump

The only thing that could be done is a small hose ran up the back of each sleeper, a hole drilled from back to front and a pipe inserted through the hole pointing at an angle downwards into a sump immediately in front of the sleepers. This avoids all the previously mentioned problems.

If  you do not say where you are your question will not be shown. These two are so bad I just had to show them

Slowing pump

My fountain pond pump often slows down and stops, i have been told that putting a stocking over the pump will solve this problem, is it true?

No, not at all. Your pumps "pre filter" is getting blocked by small particles in your pond, putting a stocking over your pump will only make the holes smaller, so they will block even quicker.
