Pump filter?

There was a question about why do you need a pond filter
when the pump you have already has one?
Look at the pump above and the arrowed area. Some years
ago this area had a sponge (some similar pumps still do)
Although its a sponge its not a filter as such. The
confusion arises when you realise a pond filter is a sponge, so the pump
has a sponge so why can hat be the filter? The sponge on a pump is there
to stop dirt getting into the pump and damaging it that's it.
A pond filter is a biological filter that has multiple
foam layers and bio media.
