Pump filter?

There was a question about why do you need a pond filter when the pump you have already has one?

Look at the pump above and the arrowed area. Some years ago this area had a sponge (some similar pumps still do)

Although its a sponge its not a filter as such. The confusion arises when you realise a pond filter is a sponge, so the pump has a sponge so why can hat be the filter? The sponge on a pump is there to stop dirt getting into the pump and damaging it that's it.

A pond filter is a biological filter that has multiple foam layers and bio media.
