water feature construction
Water feature construction from scratch, you
have seen a programme on the t.v. and it looked easy, They had something
for the water to flow along and then into a reservoir simple?
Not quite, as most tv programmes do they already had one "they
made earlier" and their reservoir fitted perfectly first time.
You can use anything for a reservoir so long as it will hold water,
you could for example use a small water storage tank (they usually cost
less than £10.00) they are available from most diy stores.
Yes you should plan your feature first, then mark out the ground
where it is going to go and then you can start digging. You should not
worry if your choice of reservoir doesn't fit first time take it out and
adjust the whole until it is level, being level is one of if not the
most important things in a water feature.
The second most important thing is splash, it may look nice that you
have water going from a "waterfall" into a small reservoir but
you should remember that water will fall as far as it is high so if your
"waterfall" is say 40 cm high then the water can fall 40 cm
either side of where you intended even more so in a high wind, the
solution to this is to have a big catchment area.
The catchment area can be covered with a grille and decorated with
your choice of material, please do not use plants as they will serve to
deflect the water elsewhere and will also need regular pruning. Although
this feature is using a water spout, you could have something like a
large pot standing on the base instead of having a wall. See or example
