Water wall, how do they work?

Below is the side view of a water wall

A) Reservoir

B) Side of wall

C) Riser pipe

D) Sump

E) Pump

F) Optional light(s)

A water wall is simple but there is a little bit more to it than just a wall  (usually glass or stainless steel)

You can not just place a pipe at the top with holes drilled in it as this will not give an even flow, as the above drawing shows it is best if the sump also goes behind the wall this way the pump can sit in it out of view. The reservoir at the top serves two purposes,  to reduce the water velocity and to evenly distribute the water. The reservoir itself is either open ended or has a slit running its whole length. The type of pump should be suitable to to pump water to the height of the wall and its length, a waterfall pump is best for this. Some self contained water walls are very thin and they have the pipe running up the inside of two walls, with the front reservoir having a lower front wall than the back, I have seen some water walls that are either all glass or clear acrylic these are sealed at the bottom along with a water pipe inlet and the water fills the space between the two walls (reservoir) and again the front wall is slightly lower than the rear wall.
